Back To You - Work in progress
State of the world
Back To You is a song I wrote when i was questioning:
- how much of who i am is dependent on the people who love me?
- when i leave them or they leave me, how much of me is still there?
- what happens when i see them again? will they still see me for who i want to be?
Very melodramatic!
This is the full demo as of March 2026:
The vision for the song is very grand and melancholic.
Things I like in the demo that contribute to the grand melancholy vibe:
- The chorus lyrics and melody
- The lead trumpet melody
- The drum fills that transition between sections
- The space left between the chorus and first verse, and first verse and second chorus
- The bassline that pushes it along nicely
There is a lot of polish that needs to happen to make this song releaseable though!
I played this with a band at an open mic on March 9th, and their rendition added a lot to the song. It made me feel very inspired to enhance my production in the demo. I think it could benefit from a lot of the ideas in the live performance:
- The drums! I love the drummer
- The dreamy electric keyboard melodies
- The urgency. The live band did a great job of building up to big drops throughout the song, especially the lengthy second verse.
The help I need:
I would want help from other producers/musicians (RICHARD CARTER perhaps?) with:
- Fixing individual instruments (the drums, bass line, guitars, etc)
- Mixing + mastering (either straight up doing it solo, or giving me advice for how to learn to do it myself)
- Replacing midi instruments with live ones ( a real horns section, real strings section, and real acoustic guitar could add quite a lot to this )
- VOCALS ADVICE/Production!!! i feel very strongly the desire to sing this song myself with my voice, but I’ve never been formally trained. I want to fill the song with vocals (like in the intro the ‘oh woah woahs’ are aspirational). I can do slightly better than these demo vocals, but this is one of the areas i have the least expertise in.
But also, I have only finished one song and feel like there are many questions I don’t even know I should be asking. I’d love to hear the perspective of a more experienced musician. I think this demo is in a good place to learn how to polish and enhance a proper release.
Thank you for reading and reach out to me on instagram @hamzasayedali or email hamzasayedali@gmail.com. I’m definitely down to invest some dollars/pounds to make this thing sound good and real, i believe in it as a song deeply!
P.S.
This song structure and production is strongly inspired by these two songs (as well as many others). They might be a good jumping off place for discussion/comparison:
Born Sinner - J Cole
Runaway - Kanye West
